The Embodiment of Jamaica’s 50th in Canada

With time ripe for a global icon of our celebration of Jamaica’s 50th, the indomitable Sandra Whiting, one of the fiery, centrical engines behind the celebration, suggested it be a Michael Chambers image. After all, internationally renowned, photographer, Chambers, has deftly and laudably applied his Jamaican-rooted sensibilities to amass a brilliantly innovative body of photographic works.

We decided on Chambers’ classic black and white of model, Mahalia. And our super-talented designer, Travis, aptly surnamed Mr. North, took my hints, clues, uhms and ahs to spin a visionary and fitting embodiment of Jamaica’s natural beauty.

The result: an inspired, frenetic flight of our national bird; an impassioned rainbow of our and multi-racial face; a fertile emblem of our diasporic nation dancing to upward, united, into the sky. This now indelible single-frame story of Jamaican/Canadian synergy welcomes all to join with Jamaicans, well beyond our Canadian borders, in an “Out of Many One People One Love” celebration of ART, PEOPLE, CULTURE and HERITAGE. Designed by the brilliant Travis North, this symbolic GALA assemblage embodies the spirit of the celebration of Jamaica’s 50th Anniversary of Independence in Canada – and calls upon iconography in nationalism, religion, arts and of course, ceremony.

The four lower compostions combine extracts from the larger to represent parts of the grander evening.

This brand is applied through all collateral – invites, poster, program book, menu, videos, etc.
